Virechana Treatment

Virechana is a component of Panchakarma Ayurvedic treatment in which a person takes oral medication that induces purgation. The unwanted Doshas are taken out of body by the anal route.

What is Virechana Treatment?

The therapeutic procedure in which patient is advised to consume purgative medicines to expel out the impurities of the body , residing below the stomach is considered as virechana.
Prior to virechana, the patient is advised to to follow strict diet, regimen and should consume medicated ghee as snehapana for a period of minimum 3 days and maximum 7 days to prepare the body for virechana. 

Virechana is indicated in,
  • Chronic constipation and piles.
  • Irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Tropical sprue syndrome.
  • Obesity.
  • Worm infestation in intestine.
  • Impotency.
  • Infertility/azoospermia/oligozoospermia.
  • Vitiligo.
  • Ascitis.
  • Anxiety/depression and psychiatric illness.
  • Pitta dosha related disorders.

Benefits of Virechanam

Virechanam helps to get rid of Pitta toxins from the body that get accumulated in the liver and gallbladder. It is extremely beneficial in management of Pitta disorders such as dermatitis, chronic fever, heartburn, jaundice, etc. 

Not recommended (contraindicated) in case of  

Patients with ano-rectal canal diseases and patients above 70 years of age.
